Houston roofs face hurricane-force wind, hail, extreme UV, and an eight-month season of heat and humidity. There is no state roofing licence to filter the contractor pool, which puts more of the burden of judgement on the homeowner here than in most markets.

No Licence Means You Are the Filter

Texas does not license roofing contractors. After Hurricane Harvey, after Beryl, and after every significant hail event, crews arrive from out of state, work for a season, and leave. Warranties from a company that no longer exists are worth nothing.

Be particularly wary of the pattern where a contractor offers to "handle the insurance claim" and waive your deductible. Waiving a deductible is insurance fraud in Texas, and it makes you a party to it.

Wind: Building for Hurricanes

Houston sits far enough inland that it is not in the strictest windborne debris region, but hurricane wind is a real design load here.

Ventilation Is a Houston Priority

• Drives cooling costs through duct heat gain and ceiling conduction.

A balanced system needs intake at the soffit and exhaust at the ridge, in roughly equal proportion. The most common defect in Houston homes is plenty of ridge vent with blocked or painted-over soffit vents, which produces no flow at all. Powered attic fans are a poor substitute and can depressurise the attic enough to pull conditioned air out of the house.
